Over past three years, the Educational Technology department has replaced the First Class email system with Google Apps for Education (ABschools). For the 2013-2014 school year, students in grades 4-6 will be introduced to ABschools. An online suite of tools, ABschools is currently used by all district teachers as an instructional resource and communication platform.
Students in grades 7-12 use ABschools to communicate with teachers, collaborate on group projects, design digital portfolios, and keep track of important events. ABschools supports personalized learning in the 21st century and gives students the chance to work on a platform widely used throughout college campuses and businesses worldwide. By introducing these tools at the younger grades, students will safely learn how to develop a positive digital footprint, demonstrate their growth in learning, work both independently and collaboratively with others, and more while working under a safe and secure environment.
The following Google App are available through ABschools:
- Google Drive: An online word document, spreadsheet, and presentation application. Students will be able to work on projects at school and at home. Students will also be able to collaborate with other Acton Public Schools District students on projects from their own home.
- Google Calendar: An online tool that teachers can use to create or share important events and assignments with the class.
- Google Sites: A website design tool used for student projects.
- Gmail: An email address that can be used to send and receive email from other students and teachers within Acton-Boxborough Regional School District only.
